For about 5 years I’ve not been celebrating my birthday the traditional way. Those years I celebrated my birthday without my loved ones around, but instead I did this with my favorite friends in fashion. This might sound a bit strange, but there’s a good reason for it, and clearly the only reason I would allow to come between me and celebrating my birthday without my family: Paris.
Turning a year older is Paris is no punishment, especially when one of your favorite shows is being held on that day, you have a husband who still knows how to surprise you, even when you’re not at home, and quite literally every store in Paris carries the latest collection which makes for great grounds to find a birthday present.
Yet I never “advertise” my birthday when I’m there, because I don’t want this day to be shadowed by disappointment… Now I hear you think “why in the world is that even possible? Being in Paris for your birthday is like beyond amazing”. Well, your are true, but you have to understand the dynamics of Paris Fashion Week, or any fashion Week for that matter, to get what I mean. Because Fashion Weeks are extremely busy, and literally everyone has their own schedule – with of course some overlaps being at the same shows. So try to get your favorite people together on one dinner table, when their agendas are back to back. Exactly, I would need to hire an assistant to plan that, a year in advance LOL. So usually my plan of action is, I don’t tell anyone, until the moment it’s lunch-time, like this season, when I walked out of the Chloe show – this is by the way the look I was wearing to that show – and told Courtney (Always Judging) it was my birthday! This sweet bird didn’t think for a second and decided we should go to L’Avenue – one of those places you go a lot during Paris Fashion Week – and more favorites of mine joined us too. Best birthday lunch ever!
Same happened for dinner” two schedules happened to come together, which resulted in one amazing birthday dinner with enough French wine and food to last the whole week. And that whole week basically was a reason to keep celebrating with whoever wanted to do drinks or dinner. So I’m quite confident to say that this is probably the best way to make up for the fact that I always have to miss your husband and kids on your birthday. And I’m good with that!
